Batter boards are the temporary wooden frameworks used to suspend the layout strings for the house foundation. Once erected, the batter boards look very similar to hurdles. The placement of the batter boards is crucial to building a foundation exactly as the building plans specify. Needless to say, properly installed batter boards help ensure the corners of the foundation are all at exactly the right angles and locations.
